Chapter 3: "But the Cowboys CUT Owens, so the media must have been right!"

So Jerry Jones cut Owens because of something OWENS did?

So Owens was even worse than THAT?

What could Owens possibly have been doing behind the scenes that would convince Jerry Jones to cut him? Does he drug and rape his teammates?

Reality check: Jerry Jones doesn't care about that stuff. What he does care about is the fact that Owens was going to be 36 years old in 2009, was coming off his most unproductive year in 10 seasons, and the fact that the team went 9-7 and missed the playoffs.

Was Jones convinced that Owens's actions behind the scenes were a significant detriment to the team, leading to the disappointing 9-7 record?

Or was Jones convinced that the media frenzy that ensued upon the release of Werder's article -- which led to players looking for "rats" and "moles" in the locker room -- served as a distraction during a critical point in the 2008 season, and with that in mind, he reached the conclusion that as long as Owens was around, the press was going to do their best to derail the Cowboys' season from the outside?

Something tells me it's the latter.

And something tells me if Owens had been 32 years old, were coming off an 80-1200-12 or better season, or the team had gone to the divisional round of the playoffs, he would've been back in 2009 in spite of his really, really, really egregious "behavior."

Heck, Jones brought him back after his first year in Dallas. Now I know what you're thinking:

"But wait. Waaaaiiiit...T.O. was on his best behavior his first year in Dallas under Parcells!"

Oh, he probably was. Wouldn't know it by the way the media documented his time during 2006. Any of these ring a bell?:

"Owens is faking his hamstring injury in camp to test Parcells! Parcells wants him cut before the season even starts! He hates him!"

"Owens wore Lance Armstrong attire while riding a stationary bike. I have no sense of humor, and neither does Bill Parcells. He's being a big distraction!"

"Owens tried to kill himself by overdosing on pain killers."

"Oops, guess we should've waited until we gathered all the facts. He's playing on Sunday."

"Owens has fallen asleep in team meetings this year."

Owens drew a 15 yard penalty for an excessive TD celebration.

"Owens was shouting on the sidelines during the Cowboys/Eagles game. According to Joe Buck, "it's a tired act, isn't it?"

"Owens threw Drew Bledsoe under the bus--"Who's pulling the trigger?" (question from a reporter he refused to answer that he threw back at the reporter)

"Owens tuned out Bill Parcells' speech after a game"

"Owens spat in DeAngelo Hall's face. We can't find footage of it on any of the 80 'T.O. Cams' from that game, but Hall says he did."

You know...if I didn't know any better, I'd say that was arguably the most negative press Owens has ever received in his career over the course of a season...or maybe a slight second to the year before in Philadelphia.

But guess what...Jerry Jones kept him. And the next year, all was forgotten and the record was revised to, "He was well-behaved/on his best behavior his first year in Dallas." It was revised to, "Well, Bill Parcells knew how to handle him."

Perception is all this is. Jones's actions don't validate or invalidate the media's sensationalist coverage of Owens...there is absolutely no reason to assume that their reports were true in 2008 just because Owens was cut in the off-season. Players are cut all the time for various reasons.
